The German Judges’ Academy

The con­vic­tion that a struc­tu­red pro­gram­me of con­ti­nuing pro­fes­sio­nal deve­lo­p­ment, tail­o­red to the prac­ti­cal needs of the pro­fes­si­on, is essen­ti­al for the pro­fes­sio­nal com­pe­tence of jud­ges and public pro­se­cu­tors has made the Ger­man Jud­ges’ Aca­de­my, with its two con­fe­rence cen­tres in Trier and Wustrau, the hub of supra-regional judi­cial trai­ning in Germany.

The Ger­man Jud­ges’ Academy’s pro­gram­me is aimed at jud­ges from all bran­ches of the judi­cia­ry and at public pro­se­cu­tors in Ger­ma­ny. Against the back­drop of the ongo­ing inter­na­tio­na­li­sa­ti­on and Euro­pea­ni­sa­ti­on of the law, num­e­rous guests from abroad also take part in the events in Trier and Wustrau each year; whe­re appro­pria­te, the­se events are also adver­ti­sed within the frame­work of the Euro­pean Judi­cial Trai­ning Net­work (EJTN).

The pro­gram­me of the Ger­man Jud­ges’ Aca­de­my, com­pri­sing appro­xi­m­ate­ly 175 cour­ses each year (of which around 155 are face-to-face and around 20 are online), is atten­ded by around 5,400 par­ti­ci­pan­ts annu­al­ly. The deve­lo­p­ment and orga­ni­sa­ti­on of the trai­ning pro­gram­me are ent­rus­ted to the Pro­gram­me Con­fe­rence of the Ger­man Jud­ges’ Aca­de­my, which com­pri­ses repre­sen­ta­ti­ves from all judi­cial admi­nis­tra­ti­ons. In addi­ti­on to the Direc­tor of the Ger­man Jud­ges’ Aca­de­my, repre­sen­ta­ti­ves of pro­fes­sio­nal asso­cia­ti­ons also par­ti­ci­pa­te in an advi­so­ry capa­ci­ty at the mee­tings of the Pro­gram­me Conference.

The Ger­man Judi­cial Aca­de­my is a supra-regional insti­tu­ti­on with a fede­ral cha­rac­ter and is joint­ly fun­ded by the Fede­ral Govern­ment and the Län­der. The basis for the work of the Ger­man Judi­cial Aca­de­my is the ‘Admi­nis­tra­ti­ve Agree­ment on the Ger­man Judi­cial Aca­de­my’ con­cluded bet­ween the Fede­ral Govern­ment and the Län­der. The con­fe­rence cent­re in Trier is an insti­tu­ti­on of the Sta­te of Rhineland-Palatinate and the con­fe­rence cent­re in Wustrau is an insti­tu­ti­on of the Sta­te of Bran­den­burg. Under the pro­vi­si­ons of the Admi­nis­tra­ti­ve Agree­ment, the host sta­tes are spe­ci­fi­cal­ly respon­si­ble for dra­wing up the bud­get esti­ma­te for the respec­ti­ve con­fe­rence cent­re – in con­sul­ta­ti­on with the fede­ral govern­ment and the other sta­tes – and for incor­po­ra­ting it into the respec­ti­ve sta­te budget.
