EJustice and electronic legal communications – on the digital present and future of justice

theme No.: 18a
responsible federal state: Hesse
date: 14.05.2023 - 17.05.2023

The conference is aimed at the management of courts and public prosecutor’s offices as well as interested judges and jurisdictions and prosecutors.
The term EJustice has established itself in Germany and at the EU level as a complementary term to E-Government. However, are the underlying implementation activities sufficiently known by the judges and prosecutors? Who uses EJustice?
The conference introduces the most important elements of EJustice in Germany. Special weight will be given to the content and implementation of the law for promoting electronic legal communications announced in October 2013 as well as the law for the introduction of electronic files into the courts’ systems and for further promotion of electronic legal communications announced in July 2017. By no later than from 2026, the leading electronic files in all codes of procedure will be obligatory. Already by 2022, i.e. virtually by tomorrow, electronic legal communications for all codes of procedure (apart from the criminal procedure code) will be the only permissible means of communication for lawyers to the courts.
Paper post will no longer fulfil the procedural written form requirement. Continuous, electronic judicial business processes are thus the topic of the present and the future. For this purpose, the conference will present the approaches and experiences in various areas.
The presented technical organisational elements of implementation and a look at aspects of IT security and additional general topics will be matters for discussion and exchanges of experiences – the conference will provide a framework and space for this.

This conference is also being convened as part of the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN). It is particularly suitable for foreign participants.
