Psychological bases for decision-making – The lawyer between the conflicting priorities of reason and intuition

theme No.: 8a
responsible federal state: Thuringia
date: 27.02.2023 - 03.03.2023

This conference is intended for judges in all jurisdictions as well as for public prosecutors.
Reason and intuition are the two key phenomena influencing our decision-making. Intuition is effortless and quick. It has usually arrived at a decision before reason comes into play. In many cases it is also very reliable, and we therefore tend to follow it routinely and confidently. Occasionally, however, our intuition misleads us. This conference intends to show how we human beings arrive at conclusions, which traps we sometimes fall into when making decisions and how we can – perhaps – avoid these. It will look at various distortions in decision-making and question cherished “rules of thumb” that can make human decision-making so fallible.
