European Social Security Law

theme No.: 2a
responsible federal state: Hesse
date: 16.01.2023 - 20.01.2023

The conference is primarily aimed at judges in social justice. It is intended to provide a systematic overview of European social law as well as to deepen current topics. The focus is on the social law references of the primary law of the European Union - in particular the fundamental freedoms and the institution of Union citizenship - as well as the social law coordination according to Regulation (EC) 883/2004 and its current reform. In a half-day introductory event it will be ensured that even participants with little prior knowledge of European law can take part in the conference profitably.
There has always been a relationship of tension between the European social legislation and the national autonomy when it comes to designing social law systems. During the process, breaks with national regulatory traditions are inevitable. Examples are the changing case law of the ECJ on the social law content of Union citizenship, the scope of the classic fundamental freedoms in the area of social security and the inclusion of economically inactive persons from other member states, refugees and employees from third countries in the scope of European social law.
The result is a diversity of opinions in social court jurisprudence that needs to be reflected upon.
A visit to the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg is planned.

This conference is also advertised in the scope of the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN). It is also particularly suitable for foreign participants.
